Aminah Ibrahim (b.1992) is a Black American, Kuwaiti, Indonesian artist and arts administrator, raised in Kuwait and based in New York City.
Primarily grounded in the body and connecting somatic movement, sound, and visual documentation, Aminah explores the geographies of identity, body politics, and body as spiritual instrument. Through meditative modes of improvisation and an intimate relationship with ritual garb and adornment, some movement explorations are witnessed in their liveness as rituals of self-reckoning and a reclamation of autonomy. Other works are developed into video artworks and multimedia installations, investigating the struggle between an exposed surveillance and an abstracted self-censorship.
Developing their practice and attaching sensibilities of performance and ephemerality to sculpture, new sculptural works incorporate natural materials, clothing, chainmail, embroidery, and text.
